Living Alongside explores a broad population that we all encounter in clinical practice, yet write about far less often:
people who live alongside loved ones struggling with significant mental health challenges and emotional or behavioral difficulties.
Clear examples include:
living alongside a person with borderline personality organization,
alongside someone coping with addictions,
or alongside a partner or family member suffering from acute or complex trauma
(in our days, large circles of people are living alongside those affected by the events of October 7th). as well as living alongside a loved one struggling with psychotic states – what we might call madness
The clinical reality of “living alongside” is distinct and unique.
While we can identify several overlapping features between this clinic and that of the person who is the direct sufferer (the identified patient), these overlaps usually remain only at the more “epidermal” layers of experience.
Living alongside such a person can be demanding and exhausting.
It calls for deep self-knowledge, responsible personal reflection, and ongoing emotional work.ש
In fact, in a certain sense, every therapist embodies elements of living alongside, simply by virtue of being present with patients in their distress. As such, therapists themselves can benefit from the particular stance of listening to the parts of them that are activated in this position.
So what does a person need when they are living alongside a close other who is struggling with psychological pain?
The lectures offer real-life clinical and everyday examples, and propose emotionally safe ways of understanding, responding, and staying grounded within these kinds of relationships.
◂ The “Living Alongside” lecture series is led by Dr. Tsemach Assif, clinical psychologist and Head of the Temurot School for Psychotherapy at Bar-Ilan University.

Living Alongside | Addictions
Here we ask: who matters more - me or the addiction?
The lecture examines addiction as an anesthetizing substitute for unresolved pain and what it means for partners, parents, and loved ones who live alongside someone organized around the addictive object.
Living Alongside | Complex Trauma
This lecture explores what it is like to live alongside a person whose inner world has been shaped by ongoing “micro-traumas” and chronic hyper-vigilance.
We look at how complex trauma affects relationships and how to cultivate moments of inner quiet and stable connection.
Living Alongside | Borderline Personality
Living alongside someone with borderline personality organization means living with intense emotional shifts, unstable relationships, and sudden flips between idealization and devaluation.
The lecture offers a psychoanalytic understanding of these dynamics and practical ways to maintain emotional safety and a coherent sense of self beside such volatility.
Living Alongside | Madness
Madness breaks the usual boundaries of logic and shared reality and can be frightening, disorienting, and at times strangely compelling.
The lecture addresses what it means to live alongside someone experiencing psychotic episodes, delusions, or hallucinations, and how to preserve one’s inner anchor while remaining connected and compassionate.
Living Alongside | Acute Trauma
Acute trauma marks the moment when familiar reality is torn open by something unimaginable.
This lecture focuses on what both the traumatized person and the one standing beside them need in order to stay emotionally present and not collapse under the shockwaves.
“The lecture was fascinating and important. It highlighted how each of us has addictive habits meant to fill an inner void. A person so busy trying to fill their own lack in order to feel full and calm cannot really see the one next to them – even the person living alongside them who is meant to be a source of fulfillment.” - Anat Z
“The lecture and the summary brought excellent clarity. In a concise and structured way, and at the same time emotionally accessible, we received essential content for therapists who live alongside – and for others living alongside. Thank you!” - Dina N
“A very engaging lecture, thought-provoking and connecting to deeper layers. I loved the perspective centered on those living alongside. The three parts of the lecture gave me a coherent, organized picture. Thank you very much!” - Meirav Sh
“A wonderful lecture series that sharpens understanding of these topics. Delivered professionally and clearly. Thank you very much - I enjoyed it greatly.” - Dafna M
“Very helpful, thank you for a lecture that was well-structured, concise, and practical!” - Hani Sh
“Thank you very much for a complex, stirring, and captivating lecture series!!!” - Ronit P
“An excellent series. Very, very interesting and presented in a compelling way. As someone who both lives alongside and works as a therapist - thank you very much.” - Nirit B
